I recently got an interesting review on one of my books. The reviewer suggested I talk about the Bollywood movies Meera Patel is watching. Do you think so too?
First of all, I would like to thank this reviewer from the bottom of my heart. I am sure ya’ll wonder about a lot of things while reading my books. But very few of you actually voice your thoughts. Unless you write a review and pose a question, I rarely discover what you are thinking about. I wish more of you took the plunge and let me know what you were thinking.
You are probably wondering what a ‘Bollywood movie’ is anyway.
Bollywood (derived from Hollywood of course) refers to the thriving movie industry in India. Bollywood movies are mostly created in Mumbai (formerly Bombay, hence the ‘B’ollywood) in the Hindi language. But Hindi is not everyone’s native language.
Bollywood movies are known for their song and dance and larger than life productions. Bollywood dancing has become quite popular in the US in recent years. Most Indian American kids probably grow up watching Bollywood movies, mostly because their parents watch them. But not every Indian American understands the language these movies are filmed in.
The Patel family depicted in my books are one of a kind. They are from the western Indian state of Gujarat so their native language is Gujarati, not Hindi. The older Patels lived in British East Africa for decades so they are highly cosmopolitan in their outlook. The older generation knows a bit of Hindi but it’s sketchy at best.
Motee Ba and Pappa (Meera’s grandparents) speak Gujarati at home. Meera’s Dad talks to his kids in English. Meera and Jeet understand the Gujarati language because they grew up hearing their grandparents speak in it. But they are not very good at speaking Gujarati.
They don’t speak or understand Hindi. When they watch Bollywood movies, they read the English subtitles.
Meera Patel has grown up in America and lived in America almost all her life. She is #MadeInAmerica. She eats theplas and curry but she loves her cheeseburgers too.
So yes, Meera Patel does watch an occasional Bollywood movie as a treat. But she gets the Titanic more than DDLJ.
This is just my take on the whole thing. This is what I thought about when I created the Meera Patel character. But you may expect something else as a reader.
So tell me, dear reader, do you think Meera Patel watches Bollywood movies all the time?
